According to the forecast data, which confirms the January trends, the share of intermodal freight transport via Italy to and from Europe will increase by 10% in 2023 at the FS Group's logistics hub. In 2022, 5 billion 300 million tonne-kilometers will be transported, +4% compared to 2021.
The consolidated figure for January 2023 shows +13.4% at the national level and +10.3% at the international level. According to CEO Luigi Ferraris, the aim is to double the current 11% share of rail freight by 2030. To achieve this goal, the FS logistics center will cover all segments of the freight transport chain, from shunting and conventional transport to warehousing and rail transport of semi-trailers. In addition, partnerships with other transport sectors will be established, especially as freight transport is competitive over distances of more than 300 km.
An important hub from southern Italy to northern Europe is the Marcianise terminal, which runs six trains a week on the Catania-Marcianise route and is fully booked on the new Verona-Marcianise and Segrate-Pomezia-Marcianise routes. Since 9 January, the Maddaloni-Marcianise terminal, managed by MIST, a company belonging to the Polo Logistica, has seen a sharp increase in the number of national and international trains, the addition of new Mercitalia Intermodal services (three intermodal trains a week to Verona and the same number to Segrate and Catania) and an increase from five to seven trains a week to the Brenner Pass.
In February there will be 100 more trains per month than in the same period in 2022, for a total of 38,000 freight units - mostly semi-trailers on board the train - of which 13,000 will be on the Adriatic ridge, from Verona to Bari.
Other services have also increased in frequency: the train to Poland has increased from two to three trains a week; the train from Campania to the Brenner, operated by Mercitalia Rail, has increased from five to seven trains a week. FS is strengthening its international freight offer to and from Germany, launching up to 20 new services in January: 14 intermodal services from northern Germany (Leipzig, Lübeck) to Milan and Verona.
