Introduction to railway industry in Ukraine

On the territory of modern Ukraine, railroads that were used by self-propelled locomotives (in contrast to horse-drawn) appeared in the 1860s. The rail transport in Ukraine in majority is owned by the government of Ukraine through Ukrzaliznytsia (Ukrainian Railways). In late 1990s a portion of Ukrainian rail transport in eastern Ukraine was privatized. The total rail length is 21 640 km and the track gauge is 1 520 mm.
