NEWAG has started the homologation process for its multi-system Griffin E4MSUa electric locomotive in Germany and Austria. The approval campaign covers authorisation for operation on infrastructure in both countries.
A second vehicle, E4MSUa-015, is undergoing electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) tests in Velim, Czech Republic, to verify compliance with German requirements and prepare for further approval stages.
Testing in the Czech Republic and Slovakia has been completed. The certification process is under way, with an application for authorisation in both countries planned for the second quarter of 2026 via the European Union Agency for Railways.
The homologation programme is being conducted under an agreement between NEWAG and PKP Intercity. The Griffin E4MSUa locomotives are designed for operation in six countries: Poland, Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary.
The locomotives are equipped for 3 kV DC, 15 kV AC and 25 kV AC systems and fitted with ETCS Level 2.
