CSX has signed a EUR 620m (USD 670m) contract with Wabtec covering 100 new Evolution Series locomotives, the modernisation of 50 existing units, and associated digital systems.
The order includes 100 newly built Evolution Series freight locomotives intended for long-haul and heavy-duty operations across the CSX network. According to the companies, the locomotives are specified to improve fuel efficiency, tractive effort and operational reliability compared with older fleet types.
In parallel, CSX will modernise 50 D9 locomotives by converting them from DC to AC traction. The scope of the upgrade includes extending the service life of the locomotives, increasing fleet standardisation, and enabling the use of advanced control and diagnostic systems.
Both the new-build and modernised locomotives will be equipped with Wabtec’s Trip Optimizer with Smart Horsepower per Ton. The system is EPA-certified and is intended to optimise train handling and fuel consumption through automated speed and power management.
Delivery of the new Evolution Series locomotives is scheduled to begin in 2026. The modernised D9 locomotives are expected to enter service from 2027 onwards.
