The Waldenburg railway operated by BLT Baselland Transport has become the first line in Switzerland to enter semi-automated service at Grade of Automation 2 (GoA2). The new operating mode has been approved for the Liestal–Waldenburg route, marking a step towards digitally controlled train operations on regional lines.
The GoA2 system is based on a communications-based train control solution that enables continuous data exchange between trains and trackside equipment. After doors are closed and departure is authorised by the driver, trains run automatically, with the system controlling speed, braking and precise stopping at stations. Drivers remain on board to supervise operations and intervene if necessary.
The introduction of semi-automated operation follows a comprehensive modernisation of the 13 km line, including new rolling stock, renewed infrastructure and upgraded signalling and control systems.
Further automation is planned from the end of 2026, when shunting movements in the new Waldenburg depot are expected to be fully automated. The operator expects the system to support more stable operations, lower energy consumption and improved punctuality while maintaining onboard staff for safety and customer service.
The digital control system and onboard technology for the project were supplied by Swiss rolling stock manufacturer Stadler.
