Alstom has signed a contract to deliver 26 additional Coradia Max double-deck electric multiple units to the Landesanstalt Schienenfahrzeuge Baden-Württemberg (SFBW).
The order is an option exercise under a framework agreed in May 2022, when Baden-Württemberg placed a base order for 130 Coradia Max trains with FlexCare Perform maintenance and secured options for up to 100 additional units. Delivery of the 26 new trains is scheduled from mid to late 2028.
The trains will be phased into service from December 2026 on Regionalexpress and Metropolexpress routes operated by DB Regio Baden-Württemberg and Arverio. They will be deployed within the Stuttgart–Bodensee network (Netz 35), covering Lot 1 and Lot 2, and are intended to support increased capacity following commissioning of the Stuttgart 21 rail hub.
Each Coradia Max trainset for Baden-Württemberg is a four-car formation comprising two double-deck driving trailers and two single-deck intermediate cars. The units are 106 m long, provide 380 seats, and are designed for operation at speeds of up to 200 km/h. Multiple-unit operation is supported.
The trains feature low-floor access at 760 mm platform height, with lifts for wheelchair users at stations with non-standard platforms. Interior layouts include multi-purpose areas for bicycles and prams, family and conference compartments, and air-conditioned passenger saloons equipped with Wi-Fi and power outlets. The fleet will be delivered in the bwegt livery.
The units will also be equipped for operation within the Digital Hub Stuttgart programme, incorporating digital signalling and automation technologies as part of Germany’s first digitised rail hub.
