The arrival represents the initial delivery under a fleet renewal programme covering both bi-mode and electric trains for regional services.

CP – Comboios de Portugal has received the first of 22 new regional multiple units ordered from Swiss manufacturer Stadler.

The contract has a total value of €158 million and includes 12 bi-mode multiple units, capable of operating under electric and diesel traction, and 10 electric multiple units. All trains are from Stadler’s FLIRT platform and are designed for a maximum operating speed of 160 km/h.

The first unit delivered is a bi-mode train with a total capacity of 369 passengers, including 204 seated and 165 standing passengers under normal load conditions. The train includes designated areas for passengers with reduced mobility and space for bicycles. Onboard equipment includes Wi-Fi connectivity and power sockets for electronic devices.

Following delivery, the train will undergo technical testing and homologation procedures to ensure compatibility with Portugal’s railway infrastructure and operational requirements. CP expects the first multiple units from the order to be handed over for service during the second half of 2026.

According to CP, the new trains are intended for regional passenger services and form part of a broader fleet renewal effort. The 22 multiple units, comprising 12 bi-mode and 10 electric trains, will be classified as CP Series 2700. The electric units are being procured under Portugal’s Programme for Climate Action and Sustainability (PACS).
