ORLEN Kolej has signed two major supply contracts for a total of 40 new locomotives from Polish manufacturers PESA Bydgoszcz and NEWAG. The procurement process was open to domestic and international manufacturers, but both contracts were ultimately awarded to Polish suppliers.
The four-axle Gama 3.0 locomotives, scheduled for delivery in 2027, feature an ecoDiesel last-mile module capable of operating on HVO fuel. This enables operation on non-electrified tracks, such as those found in ports, terminals, and industrial sidings. Developed as a modular platform, the Gama 3.0 series is designed for adaptability to various traction technologies including electric, battery, and hydrogen.
In parallel, ORLEN Kolej has also ordered 20 six-axle Dragon 2 locomotives from NEWAG, designed for heavy freight operations. These locomotives also include a last-mile diesel module and will be delivered in 2028. The Dragon 2 units are equipped for demanding traction duties and come with an operational and maintenance support package.
The combined investment supports ORLEN Kolej’s strategy to enhance fleet flexibility across electrified and non-electrified infrastructure and respond to growing logistics needs within the ORLEN Group. The new locomotives are intended to increase transport reliability and independence, particularly in refining and petrochemical logistics.
ORLEN Kolej, the second largest freight carrier in Poland, operates across Poland and Germany and offers services throughout Europe via partnerships.
