The first interregional electric multiple unit (RE-IR2), part of Romania's long-distance EMU procurement programme, has passed preliminary acceptance at PESA’s manufacturing site in Bydgoszcz, Poland.
The EMU is the first unit under the contract between ARF and PESA for the delivery of 20 RE-IR2-type trains. The visit included a visual inspection of the production line, review of the carbody structure and bogie frames, as well as verification of equipment installation and passenger seating configuration. According to ARF, all major components required for final assembly have been secured.
The first train is scheduled for delivery to Romania by the end of September 2025, where it will undergo the certification and testing procedures required for NoBo, DeBo, and type approval under EU and national regulations.
The full value of the procurement is approx. EUR 184 million.
Once in service, the EMUs will operate under PSO contracts on routes such as Cluj Napoca–Sighișoara–Brașov, Brașov–Iași/Suceava, Craiova–Cluj Napoca, and Constanța–Mangalia. Additional routes may be added following the completion of electrification works on lines such as Cluj Napoca–Oradea and Craiova–Calafat.
