Arriva has confirmed the purchase of 22 new electric multiple units for Czech domestic long-distance services. The purchase follows the award of two contracts by the Czech Ministry of Transport covering the Ex6 line (Prague – Plzeň – Cheb) and R16 (Prague – Beroun – Plzeň – Klatovy).
The investment exceeds CZK 7 billion, equivalent to over EUR 295 million. All units are to be manufactured in the Czech Republic, with most components sourced from local suppliers.
New Škoda 26Ev platform and its configuration
The new Škoda Group 26Ev platform supports modular trainsets from three to seven cars, with passenger capacity ranging from 200 to 600 seats. The three-car version features 224 seats and is intended primarily for R16 services, as well as selected runs on the Ex6 route. The four-car version includes 315 seats, one full car of which is designated as first class and is planned for core operations on Ex6.
Both train types are designed for a top speed of 200 km/h and feature a dual-voltage traction system (3 kV DC and 25 kV AC). Modifications for 15 kV AC operation, e.g. for potential use in Germany, are possible. Each unit will be equipped with ETCS and designed to meet high standards of passenger comfort, pressure tightness, and fire safety. These parameters allow use in long tunnels and on high-speed sections.

Onboard equipment and energy management
All units will feature low-floor access, air conditioning, information systems, power sockets, Wi-Fi, CCTV, and barrier-free toilets. The layout includes space for bicycles and onboard vending options. The longer units will include a bistro area.
A semi-automated driving system (ATO) will be installed to optimise traction energy use by controlling speed based on the timetable and gradient profile. Škoda cites experience from similar Baltic region units with energy savings of up to 15%. A remote monitoring system will allow predictive maintenance planning.
The first units are expected to be used on the Prague–Plzeň–Cheb and Prague–Klatovy routes under Arriva’s new PSO contracts. The visual design includes turquoise livery with a violet stripe and a large X motif across the body.
