The Class 99 locomotives underwent testing at the VUZ Velim testing circuit in January this year (as reported by RAILMARKET). The arrival of the rest of the fleet in the UK is scheduled for late 2025 and will continue throughout 2026.
Based on the EURODUAL locomotive concept, the Class 99 has been adapted for use on the UK railway network and features a dual drive system. This enables the locomotive to operate in electric-only mode as well as diesel-electric mode, allowing it to run on both non-electrified and electrified lines. This has the potential to replace diesel-powered locomotives and reduce carbon emissions on the UK railway network.
The Class 99 can operate on a 25 kV AC electrified line and has a power output of 6,000 kW at the wheels. It also features a high-power, low-emission Stage V engine. With an impressive tractive effort of 500 kN, it can reach speeds of up to 120 km/h, boasting high hauling capability and performance.
The two protection systems required on British rail networks — AWS and TPWS — have been fitted, and ETCS will soon be installed.
