Hafeet Rail, the developer and operator of the UAE-Oman railway network, has signed a contract with Progress Rail to supply 27 EMD SD70ACS heavy-haul freight locomotives.
The locomotives are designed to withstand the unique environmental conditions of the region while meeting global standards for safety, security, sustainability, and environmental protection. Equipped with high-performance engines and advanced filtration technologies—including pulse and sand filtration systems and carbon emission reduction technologies—the fleet aims to meet the standards of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) railway network.
Each train, approximately two kilometers in length, will be capable of transporting a variety of cargo such as bulk goods, containers, petrochemicals, metal products, and other industrial materials. The locomotives are expected to enable efficient freight transport between Oman and the UAE, supporting the needs of Hafeet Rail's customers once the network becomes operational.
This procurement follows the awarding of main contracts and the start of preparatory work for expanding the railway network between the UAE and Oman. Hafeet Rail is a joint venture between Etihad Rail, Oman Rail, and Mubadala. Named after Jebel Hafeet, the company focuses on strengthening economic and commercial integration between the two countries.
