Companies of the Chinese CRRC Corporation concurrently develop hydrogen-powered locomotives and trains – from shunting purposes to passenger trains.

CRRC Zhuzhou Locomotive Co., Ltd., in collaboration with China Energy Group, recently completed a milestone test of China's first high-power hydrogen energy-powered shunting locomotive. On March 28, the locomotive successfully towed a 10,000-ton load, comprising 105 C80 vehicles over a two-kilometer stretch at Sidaoliu Station on the Xinshuo Railway Bazhun Line. This test demonstrated the locomotive's ability to use hydrogen as its primary energy source, marking a significant advancement in the application of high-power hydrogen energy technology for China's heavy-haul railways.

The hydrogen-powered locomotive is designed to be energy-efficient, eco-friendly, and low in carbon emissions. It features a hybrid power system that combines a hydrogen fuel cell with a lithium power battery, offering a maximum power of 2,400 kilowatts and a top design speed of 100 kilometers per hour. The locomotive can pull loads up to 10,000 tons on straight tracks and 5,000 tons on a 4‰ slope. Its modular design includes multiple power supply modes to meet various traction requirements and is capable of operating on both networked and non-networked lines, allowing for versatile shunting within station areas.

This recent test completes the second phase of trials for this innovative locomotive, aligning with China's goals for a "double carbon target" and promoting green production practices within the heavy-haul railway sector.

Hydrogen trains with 160 km/h speed

In related news, a hydrogen-powered urban train developed by CRRC has successfully completed a high-speed test run in Changchun, Jilin Province, reaching speeds of up to 160 kilometers per hour. This train is part of an ongoing effort to advance China's capabilities in high-end railway equipment manufacturing. Featuring an onboard hydrogen power system, the train represents a shift towards more sustainable rail transport solutions. It utilizes a hybrid power system, combining multiple energy storage technologies and a hydrogen-electric energy management strategy to optimize energy efficiency. The train is capable of exceeding 1,000 kilometers on a single refuel and operates in temperatures ranging from -25 C to 35 C.
