The Győr–Sopron–Ebenfurth Railway (GYSEV) has officially expanded its passenger transport portfolio from 1 April 2026, taking over regional services on two additional routes in Western Hungary.

The move follows the July 2025 transfer of 752 km of infrastructure management from MÁV to GYSEV.

On Line 14 (Csorna–Pápa), GYSEV now operates all passenger services. The operator has replaced the legacy MÁV BZmot railcars with Jenbacher diesel multiple units (DMUs), effectively standardizing the rolling stock with its existing regional fleet to improve passenger comfort and operational reliability.

The service expansion also includes:

  • Line 10 (Győr–Celldömölk): GYSEV has taken over all regional passenger trains. However, the cross-regional Helikon InterRegio services remain under MÁV-START operation.
  • Savaria InterCity (Szombathely–Budapest): GYSEV has assumed full operational responsibility for these services, including the provision of locomotives and on-board crews.
  • Fleet Transition: For the Savaria IC services, MÁV-START will continue to provide coaching stock on a contract basis. This arrangement will remain in place until GYSEV’s own intercity diesel trainsets are commissioned and enter service.

The international Dráva and Mura InterCity trains, which utilize the Savaria route, are excluded from this transfer and remain under MÁV-START management. This phased transition of passenger duties is part of a broader ministerial strategy to consolidate rail operations in the Western Hungarian region under GYSEV to streamline maintenance and service coordination.
