PKP Intercity has signed a contract with Alstom Polska for the supply of 42 six-car Coradia Max double-deck electric multiple units (EMUs) with a top speed of 200 km/h. The agreement, valued at PLN 6.9 billion (approx. EUR 1.6 billion), also includes 30 years of maintenance services worth an additional PLN 2.8 billion (approx. EUR 650 million).
Alstom made in Poland
The new EMUs are expected to enter service in approximately three and a half years, with deliveries scheduled to be completed by early 2032. Production will take place at Alstom’s facilities in Chorzów and Nadarzyn. The Chorzów site will manufacture the vehicles, while bogie production will be handled by the Nadarzyn plant.
Cross-border operation to Czechia included
Each EMU will consist of four double-deck end cars and two single-deck intermediate cars, offering over 550 seats per set, with the possibility of multiple unit operation. The interior layout includes quiet zones in both classes, areas for families, vending machines, luggage spaces, bicycle racks, and accessibility features including step-free boarding and automatic lifts.
The EMUs will be fitted with air-conditioning, Wi-Fi, power outlets, reading lights, and real-time diagnostics systems. They will be equipped with ETCS Level 1 and 2 and will be capable of running under both 3kV DC and 25kV AC systems, allowing cross-border operation into the Czechia.
Deployment of new Alstom trains
PKP Intercity plans to deploy the new trains on domestic InterCity category services on high-demand routes, including those linking Warsaw with Gdańsk, Łódź, Olsztyn, Wrocław, Kraków, Białystok, and Terespol.
