Trenitalia introduced an updated version of its ETR 1000 high-speed train into operations. The new trains were presented with a preview run between Roma Termini and Napoli Centrale.
Deliveries are scheduled at a rate of ten units per year until 2029. The total investment is stated at over 1.3 billion EUR. The units were designed by Hitachi Rail and manufactured at the production sites in Pistoia and Napoli.
The new trains are configured for international service and are compatible with seven additional European rail networks: France, Spain, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and Belgium.
Technically, the train is homologated for operations at up to 360 km/h, though its service speed remains at 300 km/h. The traction system has been redesigned and the on-board command and control network has been upgraded to a full Ethernet infrastructure with 100 Mbps transmission speed. A new 10 Gbps network backbone and antennas compatible with 5G connectivity—operating across four telecom providers—have also been installed. The Wi-Fi network for passengers and streaming content bandwidth has reportedly increased tenfold.
The units are equipped with an Energy Measurement System (EMS) designed to collect certified data for energy billing purposes. Sustainability claims include a recyclability rate of 97.1% and a recovery rate of 98.2%, both improved compared to the earlier fleet. The trains feature lightweight materials and new electric motors aimed at reducing energy consumption. New air conditioning systems are designed to lower environmental impact with a 56% reduction in Global Warming Potential (GWP).
Interior updates involve layout changes and equipment modifications. Executive class now includes 14 seats, up from ten, each equipped with integrated laptop holders and call buttons. A newly installed galley area provides additional power outlets and expanded spaces. In Business class, a new PRM table and motorised Silent Area door have been added. The Standard class maintains its 300-seat count but includes eight new luggage racks and enlarged overhead bins.
The Bar Bistrot section has been upgraded with a redesigned counter area, a new display, updated bar showcase, shelves for merchandise, and expanded food preparation facilities. The interiors were developed in collaboration with Giugiaro Design. Each trainset features a total capacity of 461 seats.
