Azerbaijan Railways (ADY) has extended its high-speed passenger train service from Aghstafa to Gazakh.

The newly launched Baku–Gazakh–Baku service is operated by Stadler-built single-decker trains. Travel time between Baku and Gazakh is 5 hours and 36 minutes, compared to the earlier 8 hours and 25 minutes. The service runs twice daily in both directions.

To support the new service extension, ADY completed infrastructure upgrades on the Aghstafa–Gazakh section. These include track repairs and reconstruction works, alongside design completion for power supply and signaling-communication systems along the corridor. The Gazakh station has also undergone refurbishment, including improvements to the waiting area.

According to internal projections, the extension to Gazakh is expected to add approximately 10,000 passengers annually to ADY’s overall ridership figures.

The Baku–Gazakh–Baku extension continues a wider programme that includes route reactivations and network adjustments following pandemic-related suspensions. Previous steps included the 2023 extension of the Baku–Ganja route to Aghstafa, as well as high-speed connections to Gabala. In addition, new rolling stock was introduced in 2024, and further adjustments were made to service frequency and stop patterns on various intercity routes.

As part of this broader effort, other changes included new stops at Laki and Ujar, availability of free Wi-Fi on selected services, and a passenger loyalty programme. At the start of 2025, ADY resumed service on the Baku–Balaken route. These operational measures contributed to a recorded total of 8.5 million passengers transported in 2024.
