From 1 July 2025, GYSEV assumed the operation of an additional 752 kilometres of railway infrastructure, which will be added to its existing network.
The operational handover does not involve changes for passengers regarding timetables or services, as trains will continue to run on the affected lines as before. The transfer covers the infrastructure operation and maintenance, while the passenger transport responsibilities will initially shift only on the Zalaegerszeg–Celldömölk line.
The railway lines transferred to GYSEV’s management include:
- Line 10: Győrszabadhegy–Celldömölk section
- Line 11: Győrszabadhegy–Veszprém section
- Line 13: Veszprémvarsány–Franciavágás section (no passenger transport)
- Line 14: Pápa–Csorna section
- Line 17: Zalaszentiván–Nagykanizsa section
- Line 20: Porpác–Székesfehérvár section (excluding Székesfehérvár station)
- Line 23: Zalaegerszeg–Rédics section
- Line 24: Zalabér–Batyk–Zalaszentgrót section
- Line 25: Boba–Őriszentpéter–national border section
- Line 26: Ukk–Balatonszentgyörgy section (excluding Balatonszentgyörgy station)
- Line 27: Hajmáskér–Csajág section (excluding Csajág station, no passenger transport)
- Line 30: Murakeresztúr national border–Balatonszentgyörgy section (excluding Balatonszentgyörgy station)
- Line 41: Murakeresztúr–Gyékényes–national border section
The agreement covers the transfer of management rights and obligations related to the infrastructure, including track operation, maintenance, and railway services. Following the handover, the transferred network will represent a substantial addition to GYSEV’s responsibilities in Western Hungary.
MÁV previously operated an average of 420 trains per day on these lines, handling approximately 10% of the national rail freight traffic. The volume transported on these sections supported the annual delivery of around 754 million freight tonne-kilometres for approximately 40 railway undertakings.
The passenger transport on other affected sections is expected to be transferred to GYSEV depending on vehicle availability. From 1 July 2025, GYSEV will start providing public passenger services on the Zalaegerszeg–Celldömölk route.
The handover also introduced changes in fare application. From the date of the transfer, the previous price differences between MÁV and GYSEV services on the same routes will be removed. Passengers travelling on GYSEV-operated services will pay the same fares as those travelling on MÁV-operated trains over identical distances. This adjustment will apply, for example, to journeys between Sopron and Budapest.
