Koleje Mazowieckie (KM) will acquire 20 new trains, supported by funding from the European Union and the Masovian Voivodeship government. The order includes 14 electric multiple units (EMUs) from Stadler and six diesel multiple units (DMUs) from PESA Bydgoszcz.
The purchase of the 14 new EMUs will be co-financed with EUR 38.6 million from the European Funds for Mazovia 2021–2027 program. The total value of the project exceeds EUR 159.4 million, covering the purchase of the trains, a repair and post-crash package, and training for maintenance staff.
Electric multiple units from Stadler
The new units will be Stadler FLIRT3 ER160 electric multiple units. Each train will be equipped with air conditioning, accessible entrances with a push-pull sliding system, seating for passengers with reduced mobility, and facilities for transporting bicycles and strollers. The vehicles will also feature visual and audio passenger information systems, Wi-Fi connectivity, onboard video surveillance, and direct communication devices for contacting train staff.
The new EMUs will operate across the Koleje Mazowieckie network, with deliveries expected to be completed by the second quarter of 2028.
Diesel multiple units from PESA
Koleje Mazowieckie will also acquire six two-car DMUs from PESA Bydgoszcz for over EUR 55.5. million, with each unit costing approximately EUR 8 million. The contract includes maintenance and repair services until the end of 2031, along with operational training for staff.
The diesel railbuses will be deployed on non-electrified routes, covering more than 630 km of lines in Mazovia and neighboring regions. Planned routes include Tłuszcz–Ostrołęka–Chorzele, Sochaczew–Kutno–Płock–Sierpc–Nasielsk–Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki, and Siedlce–Czeremcha.
Koleje Mazowieckie had initially considered battery-electric or hydrogen-powered trains for non-electrified lines. However, cost uncertainties related to vehicle operation, fuel availability, and battery lifespan led to the decision to order diesel-powered units instead.
Koleje Mazowieckie continues to modernize its fleet as part of a broader strategy to improve service capacity and efficiency. The company has already contracted the delivery of 50 five-unit electric multiple units and 16 two-unit electric multiple units from Stadler.
