The accident occurred following a rockslide that the SJ Nord train, consisting of a locomotive and five wagons, encountered along the Nordlandsbanen route.
According to the police in Nordland, the train driver tragically lost his life in the derailment, and four other passengers sustained injuries. Emergency services, along with Bane NOR, were immediately deployed to the scene to assist with rescue operations and manage the situation.
Both the E6 road and Nordlandsbanen have been closed near the site of the accident. The line will remain shut for several days as investigations are carried out, followed by the necessary clean-up and repair work. A geologist will assess the conditions at the accident site to provide further insight into the causes of the incident.
The National Accident Investigation Board, along with Bane NOR’s Investigation and Analysis Unit, are actively investigating the circumstances that led to the derailment. Operations in the affected areas will continue to be halted until the conclusion of the investigation and the completion of repair work on the track.
Local authorities, including Hemnes municipality, have set up a crisis team to provide support. Kindergartens and after-school centers will remain open to accommodate children whose parents are unable to pick them up due to the incident.
