The State of São Paulo is starting public hearings for the Intercidades Train (TIC) Eixo Norte project.

The project is aimed at revitalizing and expanding the existing railway network to redefine urban mobility for the metropolitan regions of São Paulo, Jundiaí, and Campinas, potentially benefiting over 730,000 residents daily.

Spanning 101 kilometres, the TIC Eixo Norte will seamlessly connect São Paulo to Campinas, with a stop in Jundiaí. This project is not just about connecting points A to B; it's about reintegrating a train network that once thrived, easing the burden on road transport, and significantly enhancing the travel experience in terms of comfort and safety.

The project, necessitating an investment of approximately USD 2.7 billion, is divided into three main stages: the segregation of cargo transport between Barra Funda Station and Jundiaí; the introduction of the Intermetropolitan Train (TIM), or "stop train"; and the launch of the TIC itself, a medium-speed express service reaching speeds up to 140 km/h. This approach not only aims to modernize passenger service but also to streamline cargo transport, thereby improving overall efficiency and safety.

Rolling stock and service details

The TIC trains will be capable of carrying up to 860 passengers, with an average speed of 95 km/h and reaching 140 km/h on certain segments. The estimated journey time from São Paulo to Campinas is just over an hour, with a 15-minute interval between trains.

In contrast, the TIM will focus on connecting Jundiaí to Campinas, including stops in Louveira, Vinhedo, and Valinhos, over a 44 km route. This service is designed to be faster than the subway, with a travel time of 33 minutes and trains accommodating up to 2,048 passengers.

An auction, scheduled for February 29th, includes CRRC in consortium with local company Grupo Comporte and the French manufacturer Alstom with Brazilian group Grupo CCR.
