SYSTRA, a global engineering and consultancy group specializing in public transport and mobility solutions, has supervised the implementation of a ballastless track design on the rail network of the Port of Marseille-Fos. This 20-meter-long experimental track, a world first, is now open to rail traffic within the port's right-of-way.
In collaboration with STRADAL, SYSTRA has developed a ballastless track system using a low-carbon concrete slab. This French technology, first presented at InnoTrans 2022 in Berlin, offers a significant departure from traditional ballasted tracks. Its interchangeable components facilitate rapid installation, provide enhanced strength and durability due to the use of low-carbon concrete, and demand less maintenance.
The integrated track geometry adjustment system within the structure can compensate for platform settlements of up to 100mm in height, setting it apart from other ballastless track technologies. It is the only ballastless track system composed entirely of prefabricated low-carbon reinforced concrete. With a 10-centimeter rise in track level above the roadbed, it effectively manages water runoff during flooding, prevents track silting, and allows for the safe passage of small animals, making it an environmentally sustainable solution.
