Orlen Group has purchased Poland's first hydrogen-powered locomotive from Pesa in Bydgoszcz. At the same time, operational tests have begun.

The first run took place on Sunday 17 September on the Gdynia - Hel line. The Pesa locomotive pulled a train consisting of two Polregio carriages.

In addition to the delivery of the vehicle, the scope of the contract signed between Orlen and Pesa includes the provision of maintenance services for a period of four years, including standard inspections and possible repairs. The SM42-6Dn hydrogen locomotive will be used for shunting at the Płock factory siding.

"We are investing billions of PLN in modern hydrogen technologies. The purchase of Poland's first hydrogen-powered locomotive from Pesa Bydgoszcz is another important step in the commercialisation of this technology and strengthens our position in what is the future of motoring. At the same time, we are investing in the development of zero-emission public transport by building more publicly accessible hydrogen refuelling stations in Poland and abroad," said Daniel Obajtek, President of ORLEN's Management Board.

Thanks to its 175 kg tanks, the Pesa locomotive can operate around the clock. The vehicle's traction system consists of two fuel cells (85 kW each), batteries and four traction motors.
