The Genoa Node of the Terzo Valico Single Project is making significant progress with the activation of the newly constructed Facchini 1 tunnel. This milestone, achieved through the joint efforts of Webuild, Rete Ferroviaria Italiana, and Italferr, represents a major step forward in the overall development of the Terzo Valico.
The Facchini 1 tunnel is an integral component of the larger Terzo Valico dei Giovi - Genoa Node Single Project. This segment is strategically located between Bivio Fegino and Bivio Polcevera sections of the railway line, representing access to Liguria's port city. Webuild, leading the General Contractor team, along with Italferr's engineering expertise, both subsidiaries of FS Group's Infrastructure Cluster, played instrumental roles in the successful completion of this undertaking.
Innovative construction techniques were at the heart of this project. The historic tunnel was completely demolished to pave the way for a new tunnel, characterized by innovative construction methods never before used in the rail sector. In particular, horizontal directional drilling (HDD) technology was used to remotely consolidate the entire line, allowing the tunnel to be widened. Special mixes were injected into the ground to improve stability, and a state-of-the-art protective metal shell was installed at the southern tunnel entrance.
The reimagined Facchini 1 tunnel spans 137 meters and boasts an expanded profile designed to accommodate European standard goods trains with the PC80/PMO3 gauge. In line with the development objectives of the national railway infrastructure and the forthcoming connection with the Terzo Valico dei Giovi, this achievement is a decisive step towards improved rail capacity. Importantly, the re-established freight train routes will restore the use of the former Genoa-Ovada link, thereby improving rail connectivity in the region.
