The project, known as the Strategic Rail Freight Interchange at SEGRO Logistics Park Northampton, is entering a crucial phase as it prepares to connect with the West Coast main line.

The upcoming connection of a significant rail freight interchange to Northampton's West Coast main line is poised to revolutionize freight transport. The Strategic Rail Freight Interchange at SEGRO Logistics Park Northampton is a major step forward in the development of rail infrastructure..

Due to be completed next year, the extensive facility will include 5 million square feet of warehouse space and provide employment opportunities for up to 7,000 people. The rail connection, which will be used by freight operator Maritime will facilitate the seamless transfer of thousands of tons of goods between rail and road adjacent to Junction 15 of the M1 motorway.

Engineers are currently finalizing the railway sidings for the already established container terminal, a crucial step for efficient freight handling. In the upcoming month, railway teams will integrate the under-construction interchange with one of Europe's busiest mixed-use passenger and freight railway lines. This will involve the installation of new track, points, and signaling systems.

The West Coast Main Line, which carries 40% of the UK's rail freight traffic, will initially accommodate four freight trains a day at the new Northampton interchange, with the potential for expansion. Each freight train will be able to replace up to 76 lorries on the road, providing an environmentally friendly approach to moving vital goods across the country.

“The Strategic Rail Freight Interchange is a central part of the SEGRO Logistics Park Northampton development and we look forward to the connection to the rail network being completed so that the terminal can be operational ahead of the first customer occupying the first warehouse,” commented Kate Bedson, SEGRO senior director of national logistics.
