Aurizon has scheduled a new intermodal service between Sydney and Perth, labeled 6SP2, with operations beginning on Thursday, June 12.
The east–west route already represents a key axis in Australia’s domestic freight movement, with Aurizon offering regular services from Sydney to Perth as part of its broader intermodal network. The introduction of 6SP2 provides another weekly option in this corridor.
The expansion comes at a time when containerised freight remains a stable segment of long-haul rail operations in Australia. The Sydney–Perth corridor spans over 4,300 kilometres and typically requires around four days in transit under current operational schedules. Each new path added on this corridor increases weekly capacity for east-to-west consignments.
Aurizon’s containerised freight portfolio covers several key capital city connections. The company operates services linking Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth, aiming to cover regular and high-volume traffic across the network. In this context, the 6SP2 addition continues a trend of increasing frequency on high-demand lanes.
Aurizon, listed on the Australian Securities Exchange, is active in both bulk and intermodal rail freight. Alongside containerised operations, it transports coal, agricultural products, and other commodities, with services in Queensland, New South Wales, and Western Australia.
