The service operates between a rail freight terminal in Al Ruwais Industrial City and Khalifa Port in Abu Dhabi.

Borouge has transported more than 700,000 tonnes of polyolefin products during the first year of its rail operations with Etihad Rail Freight.

Since September 2023, over 36,000 containers have been moved by rail, with transportation time reduced from 12 hours by road to four hours by rail. The shift to rail transport has contributed to optimising logistics costs and reducing emissions compared to traditional road freight.

The partnership between Borouge and Etihad Rail was established through an agreement signed at the end of 2022. The service supports the resilience of logistics operations by reducing dependence on weather-sensitive road transport.

The Al Ruwais Industrial City terminal spans over one million square metres and provides handling, loading, unloading, storage, and maintenance for container operations. The service is being expanded to include additional UAE ports, including the Port of Fujairah.

According to Borouge, 88% of the value generated through the transport operations is directed back into the local economy under the UAE’s In-Country Value programme.

Etihad Rail Freight’s services form part of the broader UAE National Rail Network initiative, which targets a 21% annual reduction in CO₂ emissions from the country's road transport sector by 2050 under the UAE Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative.

Borouge serves customers in more than 80 countries across Asia, the Middle East, and Africa, supplying polyolefin solutions for industries including infrastructure, energy, mobility, healthcare, agriculture, and packaging.
