Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC) recorded a 47% increase in freight transport during 2024, surpassing one million tons across its lines. The growth was primarily attributed to expanded operations on the Súria-to-Port of Barcelona potash transport route, supported by the addition of a fourth daily circulation.
FGC operated nearly 2,500 freight movements in 2024, up 23% compared to 2023. These operations replaced approximately 42,000 truck journeys, contributing to reduced road congestion.
The largest contribution came from the Súria-to-Port potash transport line, which experienced a 59% increase in tonnage, rising from 539,000 tons in 2023 to 857,000 tons in 2024. This increase followed the introduction of the fourth daily transport cycle in April 2024, aligning with higher potassium salt production by ICL. The number of train circulations on this route rose from 745 in 2023 to 1,093 in 2024, representing a 46% increase.
On the Martorell-to-Port route, 107,879 wagons were transported in 2024, compared to 106,425 in 2023, reflecting a slight increase of 1.3% in transported tonnage. This line is utilized by Seat for moving vehicles from its Martorell factory.
For the transport of automotive components, the annual movements grew by 17%, from 581 in 2023 to 680 in 2024. These operations, carried out by Cargometro on the Adif network, benefitted from completed upgrades on the Mediterranean corridor, which had previously constrained transport capacities.
Dual locomotives in operation
FGC has been deploying five Stadler dual locomotives (series 257) for two years, allowing for electric traction on electrified sections (Manresa–Martorell–Sant Boi) and diesel traction on other sections. The locomotives reduce emissions compared to fully diesel-powered engines and incorporate features such as regenerative electric braking, automatic traction changes, and reduced noise levels.
The dual locomotives were acquired for €30.2 million and replace the older series 254 locomotives, offering enhanced reliability and improved ergonomics for train operators.
FGC freight lines
FGC operates freight services across three primary routes:
- Súria to the Port of Barcelona: Transporting potash produced by ICL.
- Martorell to the Port of Barcelona: Used by Seat for vehicle transport, managed under Autometro.
- Zona Franca to Martorell: Transporting vehicle components under Cargometro operations.
