For the past year, the Rail Cargo Group (RCG) of ÖBB has been transporting the beverages of Coca Cola HBC Austria. For the main part of the transport (main run), the bottles are no longer transported exclusively by truck, but sustainably by rail.
The drinks are first transported by truck from the production and logistics center of the Austrian drinks producer in Edelstal in the Burgenland region to the Vienna South terminal. Then it's on to the main line to Tyrol and Vorarlberg. Once it has arrived, the last mile of the supply chain begins, with the onward journey being completed once again by truck. From there, food retailers get involved in distributing to local supermarkets.
“This example demonstrates the strength of multimodal logistics. With it, we are closing the gap between road and rail and saving around one tonne of CO2 per transport. In one year, this has already resulted in 560 fewer truck journeys – to the environment’s benefit,” said Christoph Grasl, RCG Board Member.
The cooperation allows us to take an important step towards more sustainable rail transport logistics and for our environment,” commented Felix Sprenger, Supply Chain Director of Coca Cola HBC Austria.
