These certifications represent significant greenhouse gas savings achieved using Renfe's rail transport services compared to traditional road transport.

Renfe Mercancías has awarded the 2023 Carbon Footprint Certificates to three major clients: Pecovasa, ArcelorMittal, and Gonvarri Industries.

Pecovasa 

Pecovasa, a specialist in automobile transportation under the Renfe Mercancías umbrella, recorded notable emission reductions in 2023. Utilizing Renfe's services, Pecovasa managed to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 12,227 tons. The company moved 240,820 net tons of goods, all via electric trains operating on energy sourced from certified renewable origins, resulting in zero direct or indirect CO2 emissions.

ArcelorMittal

ArcelorMittal España, a steel and mining company, also benefited from Renfe Mercancías' sustainable transport solutions. In 2023, the partnership facilitated the movement of 825,491 net tons of goods, achieving a reduction of 51,230 tons in greenhouse gas emissions. With 92.8% of these goods transported via electric traction trains, ArcelorMittal’s reliance on rail transport underscores its alignment with environmental goals and its substantial operations in Asturias, where it produces a variety of steel products.

Gonvarri Industries

Gonvarri Industries, a player in the flat steel and aluminum transformation sector, saw a decrease of 7,100 tons in emissions through its collaboration with Renfe Mercancías. In 2023, Gonvarri transported 318,573 net tons of goods, with 96% of these volumes moved by electric trains powered entirely by renewable energy sources. Gonvarri’s operations span over 45 factories and 20 distribution centers in 19 countries.

Renfe Mercancías’ Commitment to Sustainability

Renfe Mercancías, Spain's primary rail freight operator, has been certified Carbon Neutral for its electric trains since 2023 under the PAS 2060 Standard. This certification ensures that Renfe's operations produce no direct or indirect emissions, thanks to the exclusive use of renewable energy and comprehensive energy efficiency measures. The issuance of Carbon Footprint Certificates is part of Renfe's broader commitment to sustainability, emphasizing the environmental benefits of rail transport compared to road transport.
