As the Polish Office of Railway Transport (UTK) reports, the total cargo weight carried through this mode totaled 24.5 million tons, marking a decrease of 6.3% from 2022. Similarly, the transport work completed measured 8.5 billion tonne-kilometers (tkm), which also fell by roughly 1.5% compared to the previous year.
The number of load units transported saw a significant reduction, dropping by 9.1% to 1.59 million, of which 1.49 million were containers. This corresponds to a 14.3% decrease in TEUs transported, with 2.431 million TEUs moved in 2023, down from 2.836 million TEUs in 2022.
Despite these challenges, the intermodal segment marginally increased its share of the total rail cargo weight, up by 0.1 percentage points to 10.6%. It also accounted for 13.7% of the total rail transport work, underlining its ongoing role in the logistics chain.
This continued decline reflects the sensitivity of intermodal transport to broader economic and geopolitical shifts, including the ongoing impacts of international conflicts and changes in global supply chains.
