West Midlands-based software developer Argenta, in partnership with Cyth Systems, is venturing into the rail sector with a safety technology designed to improve rail freight operations. The duo recently carried out at the Black Country Innovative Manufacturing Organisation (BCIMO) Rail Development & Test Site, supported by a grant from Innovate UK Business Growth.

The new technology, designed to reduce accidents in freight rolling stock, offers a novel approach to monitoring systems that traditionally face challenges in continuous operation due to power constraints. Unlike passenger trains, freight systems often require stationary testing with standalone equipment. Argenta and Cyth’s solution addresses this by introducing a self-generating, wireless power unit paired with storage capabilities, allowing for continuous monitoring of freight systems on the move.

The trial, which took place at the end of February, used BCIMO's facilities to gather data vital to the development of this technology. The system was installed on a locomotive provided by the Harry Needle Railroad Company, which was simultaneously testing technology from the Advanced Hydrogen Technologies Group. This collaborative effort enabled simultaneous data collection, demonstrating the potential for multiple technology applications on a single platform.

This technology not only aims to improve the safety and reliability of freight operations but also aligns with broader industry goals of reducing environmental impact and improving operational efficiency. The potential reduction in accidents not only protects lives but also minimizes the costly disruption and legal complications associated with rail incidents.

Looking forward, Argenta and Cyth are analyzing the data from their initial tests and planning further development of their prototype. They are also considering participation in the second year of the Clean Futures Accelerator, where they could gain additional funding and support to bring their innovation closer to market readiness.
