Alstom and Akiem, a European rolling stock leasing company, have signed a framework agreement for 100 Traxx Universal multi-system (MS3) locomotives. The firm part of the order comprises 65 locomotives. The total value of the framework agreement is up to €500 million.
"We are very proud that Akiem is expanding its locomotive fleet with the largest single order of Traxx locomotives for an important number of countries," says Kevin Cogo, Vice President, Rolling Stock, Locomotives & Components, Alstom.
The Traxx multi-system locomotives benefit from optimised energy consumption and can operate both freight and passenger services at speeds of up to 160 kilometres per hour. They will operate in 12 European countries: Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. As a unique feature for multi-system locomotives, some of them will be delivered with the diesel- or battery-operated "last mile" function, enabling access to ports, terminals or industrial sites without the need for a shunting locomotive.
"The 55 locomotives in this order will operate from France to Europe in a context where there have been no deliveries for the last ten years. We intend to contribute to the rejuvenation of rail freight and intercity passenger transport in France and to facilitate innovation and competition with the support of our maintenance and service teams," explains Fabien Rochefort, CEO of Akiem.
Final assembly will take place at Alstom's site in Kassel, Germany. Deliveries are scheduled to take place between 2025 and 2028.
