A new contract for electric multiple units for regional transport on the Vesuvian railway lines has been signed between Stadler and Ente Autonomo Volturno (EAV).

The framework agreement signed covers the manufacture and delivery of up to 60 electric multiple units for regional services on the narrow gauge (950 mm) railway network in the area around Mount Vesuvius, which is one of Italy's most iconic railway landscapes.

The first call-off is for 16 trains, to be delivered by June 2026. The new EMUs are similar to those in the framework agreement signed in 2021 for up to 40 trains. They consist of three carriages, whose lightweight aluminium bodyshells help to reduce energy consumption. With a total length of around 40 metres, they can accommodate 396 passengers and have 90 seats.

Iñigo Parra, CEO of Stadler Valencia, commented: "We are very proud that EAV has once again entrusted Stadler with the delivery of the new trains. Our vehicles will enhance the public transport offer of one of the most emblematic railway networks in Italy, improving the travel experience for residents and tourists alike".

Six of the 60 trains will be equipped with catenary monitoring and analysis systems. In addition to the trains, Stadler will also supply systems to improve the efficiency of maintenance operations, such as a temperature analysis system for train bearings and a monitoring system for certain critical bogie components.
