SŽ–Potniški promet said the increase was recorded despite extensive infrastructure works, line closures and timetable adjustments during the year. Most domestic and international services remained in operation, maintaining the existing service level.
The operator also completed the delivery of 20 Stadler FLIRT diesel multiple units from the SŽ 610-100 series, with the final train arriving in Slovenia in recent days. Nineteen of the 20 sets were handed over in 2025. The new DMUs are intended for regional services and include step-free access, passenger information systems, additional space for bicycles and provision for potential future conversion to bimodal operation.
Last year, SŽ signed a contract for 20 new passenger coaches for international services and four multi-system locomotives to increase cross-border capacity.
International services were expanded with the launch of a direct Zagreb – Ljubljana – Pula connection, additional Ljubljana – Zagreb services and regular Maribor – Graz trains. Services also operate towards Villach.
Slovenian Railways has also signed a declaration with other European operators and cities supporting the development of a European high-speed rail network. The European Commission’s plan envisages 49,400 km of high-speed lines across Europe by 2040, including a potential Ljubljana – Vienna journey time of four and a half hours.
