ÖBB is initiating a refurbishment programme targeting its entire Railjet fleet.

The existing 60 ÖBB Railjet trainsets, which have been in operation since 2008, are undergoing a mid-life overhaul as they approach the halfway point of their expected 30-year service span.

First deployment aligned with Koralmbahn opening

The upgraded Railjets will gradually enter service, with the first refurbished set scheduled to operate on Austria’s southern route in December 2025. This introduction coincides with the launch of the Koralmbahn. The refurbishment process is expected to continue until the end of 2031.

Technical and interior modifications

The overhaul includes installation of new seating in all three service classes. Both First and Second Class will receive new seats, while Business Class will be fitted with renewed models. Other modifications involve the introduction of larger foldable tables, footrests, integrated grab handles, and redesigned interiors featuring a wood-effect finish. Full-length backrests have been added to increase seat separation.

Floor coverings will be replaced, and onboard passenger information systems will be upgraded. Provisions for stroller parking are being revised, and vending machines will be installed for access to beverages and snacks.

For staff, the update includes redesigned compartments and improved workspace fittings.

Where Railjets are used

The refurbished trains will continue to operate on Railjet routes covering Austria and international connections to Germany, Switzerland, Hungary, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, and Italy. The aim is to align the existing fleet visually and functionally with the newly introduced Railjet generation.
