Alstom and NS presented Coradia Stream Intercity Next Generation Train

The new train offers energy-efficient, safe and comfortable transport and is 95% recyclable at the end of its life.

The order will see 79 Coradia Stream trains that can reach a maximum speed of 200 km/h. The first trains are expected to run on the Dutch national network before the end of this year. NS also ordered 20 additional Coradia Stream ICNG trains, which will run in Belgium.

Featuring the latest innovations and comfort, the new trains are starting a new era for Dutch public transport. They are part of Alstom’s Coradia Stream family, which is a huge success throughout Europe with almost 900 trains already ordered in Denmark, Germany, Italy, Luxemburg, Romania, Spain, and the Netherlands.

“The Coradia Stream are successful because they offer highly reliable, energy-efficient, safe, and comfortable transport for passengers. They also have an impressive availability rate of over 97% and are easy to maintain. We are proud that NS chose Alstom to help it transform rail transport across the Netherlands, and have no doubt that our trains will make a significant difference for Dutch travelers,” said Bernard Belvaux, Managing Director of Alstom Benelux.

The ICNG trains are designed by Alstom for NS to provide passengers with an exceptional travel experience using the latest technology, with spacious and well-lit multi-purpose areas where passengers can read or relax. Separate compartments for wheelchairs, bicycles, or people with reduced mobility are an integral part of the service. Trains are also equipped with air conditioning, Wi-Fi, mobile phone or laptop charging, as well as LED reading lamps.

The ICNG trains meet the highest standards for interoperability and are equipped with European (ERTMS) signaling systems, which will provide tighter, denser, and more energy-efficient driving via digitally predictive signaling and driving commands. This improves the efficiency and reliability of transport, especially on very busy lines.

The Coradia Stream ICNG also marks a move towards sustainable mobility, which is part of Alstom's main global objective. More than 95% of the train's components are recyclable. The train is also equipped with a modern traction system that allows regenerative braking, where the motion of the train is harnessed to power the brakes, which can save as much as 35% of a train’s energy consumption, not to mention saving on wear-and-tear on train wheels. The train also uses the newest components to reduce external and internal noise.
