The cooperation aims to support the resource-saving and energy-efficient production of high-quality steel by using rail transport, new lightweight freight cars, and extensive recycling of industrial scrap.

DB Cargo, voestalpine, and LogServ have signed a contract extension to transport over one million tonnes of steel and scrap, reinforcing their commitment to green supply chains and sustainable steel production. The partnership aims to achieve resource efficiency and energy savings while promoting a circular economy.

Steel and technology group voestalpine and freight operator DB Cargo are jointly taking steps towards environmentally friendly steel production. These efforts include rail shuttle services between major automotive plants, the use of new lightweight freight cars, and the extensive reuse of industrial scrap. The logistics partnership between DB Cargo, voestalpine, and LogServ has been extended for a further two years to continue these initiatives.

Pierre Timmermanns, Member of the Management Board for Sales at DB Cargo AG, emphasized their commitment to customer-focused solutions: "DB Cargo offers customer-focused solutions for the cycle between steelworks and the automotive industry. For voestalpine, we transport steel and scrap to various industrial centers in Western and Northern Europe on our European rail network quickly and with zero carbon emissions, thus supporting the move toward green steel production.”

Wolfgang Mitterdorfer, Member of the voestalpine Stahl GmbH Management Board, highlighted their transformation toward environmentally friendly production: "Our goal is to substantially increase the proportion of recycled scrap. This will ramp up the steel to scrap to steel cycle (recycling).”

In order to transport more than one million tonnes of steel and steel scrap each year in an environmentally friendly way, DB Cargo has introduced transport concepts from the voestalpine site in Linz, Austria. These concepts combine the speed of block trains with the flexibility of the single wagonload network. The freight trains run several times a day, synchronized with the customer's production rhythm and based on a just-in-time delivery and collection model. In addition, future transports will use prototypes of the TransANT freight wagon model, a lightweight design that increases cargo volume by 15%.
