The first standard gauge railway (SGR) freight train in Tanzania has started operations on the line between Dar es Salaam and Dodoma. The service is provided on the new standard gauge infrastructure that is designed for both passenger and freight traffic.

According to available information, the freight train is running at an operating speed of 120 km/h. This is lower than the speed of passenger trains on the same route, which are designed to operate at speeds of up to 160 km/h.

Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) has now introduced regular freight transport using the new SGR infrastructure. This development follows the previously announced plans to start freight services, now implemented on the standard gauge railway system. The commencement of these operations contributes to rail transport capacity in the East African region, providing an alternative to road transport between the port city of Dar es Salaam and the inland capital Dodoma.
