FS Italiane Group’s logistics division has entered a cooperation agreement with LOGTAINER to operate new intermodal services combining rail, road, and maritime transport across Italy and selected European routes.
The cooperation is based on aligning operational models to establish end-to-end freight logistics with an intermodal focus. The scope includes combined train-ship operations and aims to increase integration between rail and port terminals in Italy and abroad.
According to the companies, the framework seeks to align freight flows with decarbonisation policies through modal shift and more energy-efficient modes of transport. The initiative connects with national and EU-level targets for reducing emissions in the freight transport sector.
The collaboration also strengthens existing links between the two operators. LOGTAINER has prior experience in rail-port connections in Italy, while Mercitalia Logistics coordinates national freight movements with rolling stock and rail infrastructure assets.
The agreement is intended to support cargo flows in both import-export directions and along domestic corridors by combining maritime routes and inland intermodal terminals. Both partners operate services that integrate ports in Northern Italy with industrial regions in Central Europe, using rail as the backbone of inland haulage.
