The acquisition increases Alonso Group’s operational reach in rail logistics while maintaining CEFSA’s existing management structure.

Madrid-based rail freight operator Compañía Europea Ferroviaria (CEFSA) is now under the majority ownership of Grupo Alonso, following the holding company's latest expansion in the Iberian railway sector.

CEFSA’s Position in the Market

CEFSA operates a fleet of 29 locomotives and 81 double-platform 40-foot wagons, providing rail freight services across key corridors, including the Valencia-Madrid-Valencia route, where the company runs over 20 weekly trains. The operator also coordinates transport across multiple logistics hubs and general-interest ports.

Its services include locomotive provision, train path management, and coordination with intermodal terminals. The company utilizes Rail Cube, a rail management system that monitors operational resources and provides real-time shipment tracking.

Alonso Group’s Rail Logistics Expansion

The acquisition aligns with Alonso Group’s broader logistics strategy, which emphasizes intermodal freight transport. The holding company has been developing a Global Logistics Plan for over a decade, aiming to connect major maritime and rail freight hubs across the Iberian Peninsula and beyond. The initiative is integrated into European Commission-backed programs under the NextGeneration EU Funds.

With this move, Alonso Group expands its railway footprint while maintaining CEFSA’s current operational framework. The existing leadership team, led by Gregorio Urdillo, remains in place.
