After an initial test phase in recent weeks, the rail link between the docks of the Marghera terminal of the Port of Venice and the Montirone intermodal terminal in the province of Brescia is now fully operational. Montirone is one of the main hubs for the development of the MIS Group's Multimodal Transport Operator (MTO) services. With a capacity of 46 containers, the train configuration consists of 23 60-foot wagons.
The new service will initially operate 50 return trains per year, with a strong commitment from all parties to increase frequency by attracting additional containerized cargo requiring a reliable and fast connection to one of the most important economic areas in Northern Italy and beyond. In addition, customers of this new service will be able to extend their reach to the Benelux countries and the UK thanks to the active connection between Montirone and Rotterdam, also operated by the MIS Group with SBB traction. It saves time and CO2 compared to the longer transit routes from the east, through Suez and Gibraltar, to the Nordics, the United Kingdom, Ireland and the Nordics.
"We have worked with MIS, our long-time logistics partner, to realize this rail transport solution because we believe that eco-sustainability is a priority that should drive us all to reassess our production and logistics processes. GME Metals is committed to this issue and has decided to contribute by reducing road transport. We started this journey some time ago with intermodal deliveries to customers, particularly in German-speaking countries. Now we've gone a step further by using trains to collect materials from the port of Marghera and store them in our warehouses. We have chosen a new warehouse in Montirone, opposite the dry port operated by MIS," said Andrea Quaresmini, Managing Director of GME Metals.
