Norfolk Southern Corporation collaborated with 62 customers in 2023, with a collective investment of $3.1 billion, to establish of various industrial facilities and expansions.


The efforts of Norfolk Southern Railway in enhancing industrial development are further supported by the addition of 41 new rail-served industrial development sites to its NSites database. This resource is available for businesses looking to expand or establish their presence on the rail in 2024.

Key customer projects:

Scout Motors: Investing $2 billion in Richland County, South Carolina, for a new electric vehicle automotive manufacturing facility.

  • General Motors and Samsung SDI: Joint investment exceeding $3 billion in New Carlisle, Indiana, for an EV battery cell plant
  • Albemarle: Investing $1.3 billion in Chester County, South Carolina, for a lithium hydroxide Mega-Flex facility
  • Ford: Significant investment in Marshall, Michigan, for the production of lithium iron phosphate batteries

  • Anchor Ingredients: Investing $40 million in Richmond, Indiana, for a new pet food ingredient facility
  • Pure Cycle: Investing $363 million in Lawrence County, Ohio, for a new polypropylene recycling plant
  • Idaho Forest Group, LLC: Investing $120 million in Lamar County, Mississippi, for a new lumber mill
