CAPTRAIN España is the leading alternative railway operator in the Iberian Peninsula. The addition of eight new locomotives, scheduled to be received by 2025, will increase the company's fleet of modern multi-voltage electric locomotives to a total of 24.
The acquisition of the Stadler EURO6000 locomotives was made possible through a €15 million grant from the Spanish Government's Sustainable and Digital Transport Support Programme. This funding is part of the NextGenerationEU Recovery plan for Europe.
CAPTRAIN España already operates twelve locomotives acquired through a previous agreement with Stadler Valencia and other suppliers in 2020. Additionally, four more locomotives are set to enter service in the coming months. The combined fleet, including the newly acquired locomotives, will bolster transport capabilities within Spain and Portugal and contribute to the growth of the Mediterranean Corridor.
In 2022, CAPTRAIN integrated Portuguese rail freight carrier TAKARGO into the CAPTRAIN holding company. In 2022 alone, CAPTRAIN España and TAKARGO operated a total of 18,136 trains for their customers, with 27% of them being international journeys connecting Spain, Portugal, and France.
CAPTRAIN España currently maintains regular direct connections with Austria, Belgium, Luxembourg, and France. The company plans to expand its traffic in the short term, capitalizing on the development of the Mediterranean Corridor's extensions and terminals.
Eight new locomotives will be able to run on both standard gauge and Iberian gauge tracks.
