Bulgaria: BDŽ tenders shunter locomotives and trainsets

The Bulgarian Ministry of Transport and Communications has issued several tenders for new rolling stock. It includes 18 shunting locomotives and up to 62 new trainsets.


Bulgary is looking for new rolling stock for passenger transport. The national passenger rail carrier, BDŽ Putnicheski Prevozi Ltd., is owned by the Ministry of Transport and Communications and should receive the newly tendered rolling stock.

The newly-announced tenders include:

  • 20 push-pull trainsets with a capacity of 300 seats and a maximum speed of 200 km/h
  • 35 single-deck electric multiple units with a capacity of 200 seats and a maximum speed of 160 km/h
  • 7 double-deck electric multiple units with a capacity of 300 seats and a maximum speed of 160 km/h

All the announced tenders include 15-year maintenance. The double-deck units and locomotives have a submission deadline of 19 June 2023, while bidders for single-deck units and push-pull trainsets can submit their offers by 10 July 2023.

From its modern fleet, BDŽ operates 15 Siemens Smartron locomotives, and it has recently modernised 46 Siemens Desiro Classic diesel multiple units, modernised by Alstom.
