Together with Deutsche Bahn (DB), Austria company presented the modernized couchette car Comfort in Hamburg. This is being used in more and more Nightjet trains and also to and from Hamburg. In a so-called upgrade program, ÖBB converted a total of 22 seating cars from the existing night train fleet into new multifunctional couchette cars.
Sabine Stock, Member of the Board of ÖBB-Personenverkehr AG: "By 2026, we want to have doubled the number of Nightjet passengers to three million annually. To achieve this, it is not only important to add new destinations to our Europe-wide night train network, but also to offer modern and comfortable night trains. With the Nightjet Upgrade program, we have transformed conventional seating carriages into modern multi-function couchettes. This increases sleeping comfort and privacy for our passengers."
The newly designed 4-seater compartments with fixed beds increase travel comfort, especially for families. The new multifunction couchettes also have storage space for strollers. Each multi-function couchette is equipped with a modern barrier-free compartment with two beds and a barrier-free WC.
"The Nightjet train is not only a strong symbol for climate-friendly travel but also for a connected, borderless Europe. Together with ÖBB and our other European partner railways, we will be connecting 13 European metropolises with millions of inhabitants by rail overnight over the next few years. We are delighted that our passengers can now explore Europe even more comfortably in the new carriages," commented Stefanie Berk, Marketing Director DB Fernverkehr.
All newly designed couchette cars have three bicycle parking spaces. This means that bicycle transport will be possible on almost all Nightjet lines in the future.
