The train has derailed near the Bavarian Alpine resort of Garmisch-Partenkirchen at about 12:20.

It is not yet clear why the train derailed.

Several carriages of a regional train on its way to Munich overturned on their sides. It is not yet known how many people were traveling on the train. Today was the last day of school before the weekend so many students might have been on this train.

The number of injured people is currently 60, 16 of whom are seriously injured, a spokesman for the Garmisch-Partenkirchen district office told the Merkur online. "People are being pulled out of windows," a spokesperson for the federal police said to Bild newspaper. Among the injured were "all age groups", Bild added.

"All available rescuers are intervening at the scene," Focus Online quoted the police spokesperson. Six helicopters are involved at this place, some of them from Austria allegedly.
