The tests on the rail line between Madrid and Barcelona are being carried out by the ILSA, the consortium that is partly owned by Trenitalia (FS Italiane Group).

The project begun by Trenitalia in Spain is aimed to attract more people to travel by train, in accordance with the European Union’s sustainability goals. The possibility of providing high-speed connections in Spain is part of a process that began in November 2019, when ADIF, Spain's rail infrastructure controller, allocated 30% of the trains on the high-speed network. More than ten years of experience in operating the high-speed system in Italy and its sharing with Spain will allow further significant development of rail transport between major Spanish cities.

The official "premiere" of the Frecciarossa 1000 in Spain is expected by the end of 2022. Tickets will be set to go on sale between September and October.

The high-speed service will be operated by company "iryo" and will initially connect Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Malaga, Cordoba, Valencia, Alicante, and Zaragoza. After that, it is planned to extend the high-speed trains to other routes.

The train convoy which is carrying out the technical trials is one of the twenty new Frecciarossa 1000s built by Hitachi in Italian workshops with the same characteristics as those used in Italy.

Great importance is placed on the ecological aspect. Trains can be almost completely recycled, which means an 80% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions per passenger journey, and, precisely for that reason, it has been awarded the EPD Environmental Product Declaration.
