GB Railfreight (GBRf) signed a 7-year contract with Transport Scotlant to provide motive power for Caledonian Sleeper – an overnight service connecting London with Scotland.

On 25.6.2023, a new era for Caledonian Sleeper started. The Scottish Government took over the service as Operator of Last Resort Duty. This resulted from the government’s decision in October 2022, when the franchise with Serco was terminated.

The traction for these night trains connecting London with Glasgow, Edinburgh, Inverness, Aberdeen and Fort William, was provided by GBRf since 2015 with a 15-year contract. With a new customer ordering these trains, a new contract was needed. And GBRf managed to keep its position as a motive power provider for the next seven years.

The service runs on the electrified section with Class 92 locomotives, with certain trains requiring locomotives a change for diesels for the last section, for which GBRf provides Class 73 locomotives. However, this might change with the arrival of Class 99 locomotives. Thirty of these EuroDuals for the UK were ordered by Beacon Rail and will be in service for GBRf from 2025, according to the schedule. This will allow a shift to bi-mode locomotives that could haul these trains along the entire route, utilising their dual-mode potential.
