Samskip launches short sea shipping service between Iceland and APM Terminals in Gothenburg.

On 5 April 2023, the shipping company Samskip will call at APM Terminals in Gothenburg for the first time, marking a major investment in short sea shipping between Gothenburg and Europe.

"We are pleased and proud to announce that Samskip has chosen to redirect its route via APM Terminals in Gothenburg,” says Brian Bitsch, Commercial Manager at APM Terminals. “The new call to the port not only offers a lifeline between Iceland and Sweden but also marks the start of a competitive and sustainable short-sea offering from the Nordic region’s largest container port to the continent."

Samskip will call weekly at APM Terminals' newly renovated quay, which has been specially adapted for short-sea traffic. The vessel will then sail on to Aarhus, Runavik in the Faroe Islands and then Reykjavik before arriving in Rotterdam four days later.

"We are pleased that the solution has come to fruition, and we see clear benefits in calling the port of Gothenburg,” comments Kenn Mellgren, Operations Manager at Samskip, and continues: "We look forward to being able to offer our customers access to the extensive rail network from APM Terminals Gothenburg to the Swedish hinterland. The combination of shipping and rail is by far the most climate-efficient way of transporting containers, and sustainability is one of the most important foundations in our business."
